Dry brushing for glowing skin

As the winter season has arrived our skin tends to get more dry, dull and pale. There are a couple of things we can do however to make our skin more glowing, also during this time of the year. One of my personal favourites is dry brushing. Dry brushing is a traditional Ayurvedic skin remedy to detoxify the body and to give your skin a more healthy and luminous appearance.

Our skin is our largest organ in the body, it helps us to eliminate approximately one third of our bodies toxins. Dry brushing stimulates the elimination of toxins as it stimulates the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is in charge of getting rid of cellular waste products. As you dry brush you increase the circulation in your skin and in the connective tissue which helps reduce cellulites. You’ll also get rid of dry dead skin cells which will give your skin that glowing effect.

How to:

  1. Dry brush in the morning before you step in the shower. Believe me, this routine is much more energising than taking your usual morning coffee/tea! Brush towards the heart and use upward strokes. Don’t forget the more sensitive areas such as your inner thighs and your armpits, these are very important to stimulate the lymphatic system. You might experience some discomfort the first times dry brushing, but with time your skin will get used to it. When brushing your stomach, brush in a clockwise direction.
  2. Apply a good oil such as coconut oil or argan oil to your skin before getting in the shower. If you have the time, give yourself a little self-massage to further stimulate the circulation and to give your body some positive energy to start the day right. If you prefer to moisturise your skin afterwards you can do that as well, although applying a healthy oil to your skin before showering will give your skin the chance to absorb it easier and therefor reap the benefits of the oil as the pores opens up when showering in warm water.
  3. Lastly, make sure you clean your brush once a week with soap and water and to use a natural brush as the synthetic ones can irritate your skin.

This morning routine won’t fail you. You’ll feel much more energised and your skin smooth. Something we might need a little extra of during this season 😉
